YouTube: 1 Billion Videos A Day … but Profitability?
If you had any doubts as to who the king of online video was, the recent report from comScore settles the score beyond all doubt – in August, YouTube surpassed 10 billion views in a single month in the United States for the first time, making YouTube nearly 20 times more popular than its nearest rival in online video, Microsoft, which showed just 547 million videos.
However, these numbers are only for the US – the company released more precise viewing figures than it had in the past, saying it serves more than 1 billion videos a day, or roughly 30 billion videos a month.
However, profitability for YouTube still remains a question mark with no clear numbers on the degree of monetization of the videos – there are quite a few estimates floating around – one which says that the site could only monetize between 3% and 5% of videos, while another prediction from Spencer Wang, a Credit Suisse analyst, puts YouTube’s losses at $470 million in 2009.
