Will Receive Ads On My Mobile For Free Calls
Blyk, a pan-European free mobile operator, funded by advertising is due to start by launching in the UK soon. This service will offer subscribers free calls and text messages in return for their acceptance to receiving advertising on their phone. Given that a recent study by Ball State University had shown that college students are growing increasingly receptive to receiving advertising via text messages on their cell phones and other mobile devices in return for freebies, this should be service to watch.
While Virgin Mobile has started a similar service in the US last year, Blyk is attempting to make its mark in one of the most competitive and technologically sophisticated mobile markets and hence would be a better indicator of the viability of such a model.
Mobile advertising is expected to generate $1 billion to $2 billion in revenue worldwide this year, with future estimates putting at reaching something between $5 billion to $11 billion within five years.
Just another indication that we are moving towards an advertising driven model.
