Violinist Offers Recording For Free Online

Taking inspiration from Radiohead who recently allowed fans to choose what they wanted to pay online for their latest album “In Rainbows,” British violinist Tasmin Little plans to give her next recording away for free as a digital download from her website in an attempt to popularise classical music.
The album, called “The Naked Violin”, will feature three pieces for unaccompanied violin – Bach’s Partita No. 3 in E Major, Luslawice Variations by Paul Patterson and Sonata No. 3 (”Ballade”) by Eugene Ysaye.
The decline in physical album sales are leading to new revenue models. For instance, for Radiohead, while the media claims that the majority of fans did not pay anything for the online download of their album “In Rainbows” (something that Radiohead continues to refute), the physical version of the album went straight in at number one in the British album charts – an indication that all the publicity and hype paid off.
Most artists are finding that most of their revenues are coming, not from records sales but from touring and merchandise sales, corporate sponsorships, etc. which is where such publicity would really help. But if such instances were to increase, it would no doubt get crowded in the online arena as well.
