			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Though still in its infancy, mobile gaming is already a billion dollar industry in the US, according to <a href="http://www.instat.com/catalog/wcatalogue.asp?id=231#IN0804316MCM" target="_blank">In-Stat&#8217;s latest report</a>.<br />
Moreover, the momentum in the US and worldwide, is expected to continue, with mobile gaming continuing to be a key contributor to wireless data usage and revenues.<br />
The mobile gaming development industry is highly fragmented due to the wide variety of mobile operating systems, available handsets, and lack of industry standardization. This fragmentation has resulted in mobile developers and publishers making the difficult decision of spending finite resources developing games on the platforms they believe will have the best chance of success.<br />
Some findings:</p>
<ul>
<li>Almost 20% of game-playing respondents to an In-Stat consumer survey report downloading games from Internet sites other than their mobile carrier’s site.</li>
<li>Of the 2,000 respondents, 29.5% reported playing games on their mobile handsets.</li>
<li>In-Stat predicts the global mobile gaming market will top $6.8 billion by 2013.</li>

But as <a href="http://www.wildblueskies.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/gaming-20080826.jpg"><img class="alignleft alignnone size-full wp-image-1215" style="float: left; margin: 2px;" title="gaming - all play, no pay" src="http://www.wildblueskies.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/gaming-20080826.jpg" alt="" width="292" height="161" /></a>the media developed, one truth that started becoming clear, was that while consumers enjoy playing mobile games, they don&#8217;t really like paying for them.<br />
&#8220;Compared with other mobile categories, such as messaging and music, the paid download market for mobile games lags far behind,&#8221;  says eMarketer senior analyst, John du Pre Gauntt, and author of <a href="http://www.emarketer.com/Report.aspx?code=emarketer_2000508" target="_blank">a new report</a>.<br />
At the same time, eMarketer <a href="http://www.emarketer.com/Article.aspx?id=1006500" target="_blank">projects</a> the population of mobile gamers who pay directly for mobile games growing from 155 million people worldwide to 500 million, with mobile games generating $7 billion in revenues worldwide in 2012, up from $1.9 billion in 2007.<br />
The notable point however is that, at a growth of 1205%, ad-supported mobile game spending is eclipsing the overall spending at 263%.</p>

A Gartner report further notes that the Asia/Pacific region (including Japan) represents by far the largest market for mobile gaming, with end-user spending forecast to total $2.3 billion (Rs 9,851 crore) in 2008 and reach $3.4 billion (Rs 14,562 crore) by 2011. Compare this Western Europe (from $701 million (Rs 3002.38 crore) in 2008 to $862 million  (Rs 3,691.94 crore) by 2011) and North America (from $845 million (Rs 3,619.13 crore) to approximately $1.2 billion  (Rs 5,139.6 crore) in 2011).<br />

According to <a href="http://www.business-standard.com/compindustry/storypage.php?leftnm=lmnu1&amp;subLeft=1&amp;autono=309169&amp;tab=r" target="_blank">this article in Business Standard</a>, advergaming or placement of brands in mobile games, is the fastest growing segment, enough for Rajiv Hiranandani, co-founder and country head, Mobile2win to conjecture that advergaming would increase 300-350 per cent as brands were looking at mobile as the medium to reach customers. Mobile2win, has already worked with over 10 brands for advergaming, is in talks with 35-40 brands for similar tie-ups.<br />
Others are just as bullish. According to Mahesh Prasad, president, applications, solutions and content, Reliance Communications, “Mobile advertisement is not all hype. Look at Japan, mobile advertisement is around $1.2 billion market. Every operators across the globe is furthering the concept. This medium gives the advertiser 360 degree approach to the campaign.”<br />
With the number of gamers in India increasing, expect a lot of activity in this sector, especially given the <a href="http://www.wildblueskies.com/2007/11/23/217-million-subscribers-going-on-500-million/" target="_blank">increasing number of mobile subscribers</a>.</p>
