Of 45.3 Mln Active Indian Internet Users, 47% Don’t See Use

As on September 2008, India had 45.3 million active internet users according to the I-Cube [Internet in India] Study, conducted by IMRB International and Internet and Mobile Association of India [IAMAI]. Active internet users are those who have used the internet at least once in the last one month. This represents a growth of nearly 17% over the same period a year ago.
Of this 45.3 million, about 42 million are from urban India, up about 13% from the 36 million of last year.
The number of “claimed” internet users in September 2008 was 57 million compared with 48 million in September 2007, recording a less than 10% growth. Claimed users are those who have used the internet sometime but not in the last one month.
What is pretty revealing however, is that 47% of the active internet users still don’t know how it can be useful. I wonder what they are doing online, and what their demographic profile would be.
