Korea Shows The Future Of DVD Rentals
Posted on September 8th, 2008 by dhirender
In Korea, where average broadband penetration rate by household hit 90.1% last year (and in Seoul reached 107.8%), nearly 50% of Internet users say they download movies, and the typical users is downloading about a movie a week. DVD sales have more than halved between 2008 ($285 million) and 2002 ($673 million), and rental shops fell to a third of their 2001 numbers by the end of 2007.
As GigaOm states, Korean film studios are making peace with the inevitable, and starting a web-based movie download service by the end of the year. Is there a lesson here for the rest of us?
