Is YouTube Moving Towards Allowing Video Downloads?
Check out the videos in the YouTube Change.gov channel, and you’ll see a link at the bottom of the videos “Click to download” which allows you to download the video onto your hard drive in MP4 format.
The question is whether it is going to be open for political videos of the likes of the president’s address, or, will be open for all videos?
Harvard Professor, and Obama adviser Lawrence Lessig on his blog believes that it is going to be open to all videos, and this would be a pretty good move for YouTube – especially since for people who really want to download the video, there are plenty of tools available to do so.
However, I wonder how that would work out for advertising. Would downloaded videos come with embedded advertising, and how would they work – would this mean a shift from the Google advertising as we know it?
