Indians Spend An Average Of $2,066 Online Annually?
The Indian internet user spent $2,066 on an average during the last 12 months buying goods and services on the Net, according to a six-nation study done by payment solutions player Visa, comapred to Asia-Pacific customers, who on an average spent close to $2,526. Phew!!! that’s a lot.
According to the report, 80% of the Indian respondents said they favoured using the internet due to the convenience factor with an equal number citing ease of payment.
While paying for music downloads remained the most popular online purchase in the Asia-Pacific region, close to 22% of the Indian spends happened for purchase of airline tickets with the average purchase being pegged at about $700. (Note – that does seem to be on the higher side).
Surprisingly, close to 57% of the Indians surveyed had shopped both locally and on foreign e-commerce sites. While 51% of these overseas purchases were US-related , Singapore came a close second with 17% while China was number three with 12%.
E-commerce has seen an explosive growth in India on the back of rising plastic card issuance. Currently, debit cards outnumber credit cards. Statistics indicate that global e-commerce could grow to $183 billion by 2012. India, which has been a late adopter of e-commerce , should see this segment rise to $5.6 billion by 2011 from the current base of $2.8 billion. In 2006, it was $0.8 billion.
