Does Australia’s Online Code Of Conduct Hold Good?
Australia has recently unveiled a new code of conduct to regulate online and mobile phone content which will call for classifications similar to those for films – for instance, all content likely to be rated as for viewers aged over 15 will need to be assessed and classified under the code. The intention is to assists both children and their parents to make informed choices about what is, or is not, suitable for viewing online or on mobile phones.
However, this only affects online content originating in Australia, which given the qualities of the Internet as a media raises questions as to the effectiveness of such a code, given that content from across the globe is accessible at the click on a mouse (to use a cliche).
