DoCoMo Looks At Buying Stake In Tata Teleservices
In a deal pegged at about $1.5 billion (approx. Rs. 6,700 crore), Japan’s NTT DoCoMo seems to be buying 25% of Tata Teleservices, which would value the company at $6 billion, or Rs. 26,000 crores.
Tata Teleservices, the second largest CDMA player in India with 28 million subscribers has notched up losses of about Rs. 5,604 crores between 2005 and 2007 says Business Standard.
At the same time, the Indian mobile market, adding between 8-9 million users a month has grown to about 300 million users, which Gartner estimates should reach about 737 million by 2012.
As the growth in Japan slows down, DoCoMo has been looking at international acquisitions – having recently invested $350 million in Bangladesh’s number-three mobile phone operator, TM International (Bangladesh) Ltd.
Even as the tussle for ARPU continues, the entry of DoCoMo, one of the pioneers of the Japanese mobile market, spells good times ahead for the Indian mobile subscribers.
