Despite Slowdown, GSM Subscribers Numbers Rise


No doubt helped by the festive-season sales, GSM telecom companies added 7.7 million subscribers (excluding Reliance Communications) in October according to figures released by the Cellular Association of India – their highest-ever addition in any month.
This takes the GSM subscriber base in India to 241.4 million – at thisĀ  rate, the GSM segment should cross the historic 250 million milestone by December 2008 according to TV Ramachandran, director-general, COAI.
Bharti added 2.72 million subscribers during the month, a growth of 3.5% mom which takes its market share to 33.23%. Vodafone and Idea Cellular too maintained their growth adding 2.08 and 1.20 million subscribers respectively, while BSNL continued to disappoint adding 0.67 million subscribers, a decline of 1.1% MoM. However, Spice’s additions for the month stood at 0.04 million.
