China’s Online Population Crosses 298 Million
Inspite of the numerous efforts by the Chinese Government to block access to material deemed subversive or pornographic, China’s population of Internet users has risen to 298 million, which represents an increase of 41.9% over the same period last year.
In fact, by the end of 2008, the number of net users in China, was almost the same as the entire population of the United States.
However, China’s Internet penetration rate is still relatively low, with about 22.6% of its population online, leaving more room for rapid growth, according to CNNIC. The Pew Internet and American Life Project places U.S. online penetration at 71%.
The financial size of China’s online market, however, still trails that of the United States, South Korea and other countries.
Moreover, in 2008, 117.6 million people accessed the internet using their mobile phones last year, up 133% from 2007. With licenses for 3G finally issued, and services expected by 2011, expect a new surge in Internet use given that China has 633.8 million mobile phone users.
