Change Your Mobile Service Provider For Rs. 19
Mobile users wanting to change their service provider while retaining their own number would be able to do so starting December 31. All this, at a cost of a mere Rs. 19.
Mobile number portability would be introduced in metros from December 31 and in the rest of the country by March next year. According to a statement from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), operators are free to charge any amount less than or equal to Rs 19, as the ‘porting charge’.
To port a number, a subscriber would have to request the new operator for acceptance of his connection and the process would have to be completed in four days. MNP would help in increasing competition between service providers, besides acting as a catalyst for them to improve quality of service.
According to estimates, about 25% of current mobile users would opt for a shift to a new service provider. Now to see which service provider wins at the cost of the other – any guesses?
Expect operators to launch a slew of incentives and schemes to retain their subscribers – hopefully, it will also lead to lesser dropped calls, and better coverage, and not just a round of musical chairs for the subscribers.
