Airtel Reduces Roaming Rates By 60% – Is It Enough?
In a move that is bound to add fuel to the mobile tariff wars, Bharti Airtel in it’s latest plan called Airtel Turbo has dropped its roaming charges by 60%.
Under the Airtel Turbo plan, subscribers would be charged 60 paisa per minute for all incoming calls while roaming, Local and STD outgoing calls to an Airtel mobile customer while roaming would be 60 paisa per minute, while Local and STD outgoing calls to another network while roaming would be 80 paisa per minute.
This still does not seem to match the Simply Reliance – Pay per min plan from Reliance according to which subscribers pay 50 paisa for all calls – local outgoing, local STD, roaming incoming, roaming outgoing local and roaming outgoing STD.
Is this an effort to retain customers after the launch of mobile number portability?
According to a report by research company B&K, roaming contributes 8.3% to overall wireless revenues and if all of Bharti’s subscribers opt for the latest plan, it would lead to a reduction of 1.7% in its wireless revenues and of 1.4% in consolidated revenues.
