Chinese Netizens Surpass Americans Online

As of February, the number of Chinese on the Internet have surpassed the number of Americans online.
With 220 million netizens in February, which increased to an estimated 233 million in March, the Chinese are staking their claim in both the real world, as well as the virtual world.
USA on the other hand had 216 million internet users at the end of 2007 according to Nielsen NetRatings.
The percentage of American users at 71%, still exceeds China’s 17%, but then, China also has 1.3 billion people, compared with nearly 304 million in the USA.
China however has a higher growth rate, inspite of governmental controls in filtering partly because of the governments mandate to promote cheaper technology and the knowledge economy. [Via]
