HDTV Set To Enter Indian Markets
High-definition television (HDTV) is all set to make an entry into India by the end of this year, with direct to home operators (DTH) such as Dish TV and Reliance Communications planning to offer HDTV set-top boxes to customers. Estimates put the price of the boxes at between $85 and $100 - nearly double those of a normal set-top box.
Over 16 per cent (2.5 million) of TV sale of consumer electronics companies like Samsung are HDTV-ready, and content producers and broadcasters have already jumped into the bandwagon. Says Peter Mukherjea one of the promoters of INX channel: “It might be 30-50 per cent more expensive to produce HDTV content, but we have decided to be HDTV-ready with our news channel. For a new channel it does not make sense for us to buy equipment which is not HDTV-ready.”
The cost of an HDTV venture is estimated to be about 30 per cent higher than television infrastructure in standard definition. [Via].
I wonder if the subscription charges for such channels would also increase.
