When Domains Make Money

Shattering the previous record for a .co.uk domain of $300,000, paid in October last year comes a British travel company, which paid 560,000 pounds ($1.1 mln) for the domain name cruises.co.uk, effectively $1 million just for the letter “S” since it already owns the address cruise.co.uk.
The reason - ‘cruises’ consistently ranks high on Google, with ‘cruise’ a close second.
This, however, is still a way away from the current most-expensive domain, sex.com, which was bought for $12 million in 2005, followed closely by porn.com, snapped up for $9.5 million last year.
The race for being at the forefront of organic searches is leading to a number of revenue models built around domains, with people snapping up generic domain names and using them as landing pages to channelise traffic. Though this usually involves a pretty good skill in SEO, a recent startup EvoLanding promises to change that.
EVOLanding uses proprietary technology to update a domain with relevant, media rich content—photos, products, videos, downloads, articles), with ads placed in high click areas ensuring a high degree of monetisation for your domain.
