Presented as “The future of collaborative fiction,” StoryMash is a collaborative system of user generated content that pays all authors over 50% of all revenue made by the content they publish.
Authors can start new stories, continue existing stories, or take a story in a different direction by adding a chapter to its middle, while readers vote for their favorite chapters and choose how they want the story to continue.
The way it works is something like this:
The basic unit of authorship on StoryMash is the chapter. Each chapter has its own discussion forum for providing the author feedback, encouragement, or new ideas. Once an author is satisfied with their chapter, they “publish” it making it available for voting to the community. In addition, authors also get 50% of all advertisement revenue from the chapter.
The interesting thing here is that once a chapter is published any registered user including the original author can continue its story by adding the next chapter. In fact many different authors can each create a next chapter. Each author adding their take on where the plot goes. In this way what started out as a single chapter would branch into many stories.
The chapter deemed to be best by the community in the timeline determined by the ongoing contest wins a prize.
It is noteworthy how communities are now including revenue share for the members - take Capazoo for instance or Amie Street or Threadless, Our Stage, etc..
