Another step towards ubiquitous Internet Access came a few days earlier, with JetBlue Airways offering a free e-mail and instant messaging service on one of its planes. American Airlines, Virgin America and Alaska Airlines plan to offer broader Web access soon, but at a price (estimates put it in the region of $10 per flight).
“In a few years time,” according to Henry Harteveldt, an analyst with Forrester Research, “if you get on a flight that doesn’t have Internet access, it will be like walking into a hotel room that doesn’t have TV.”
The network could potentially also be used for communications within the plane itself and for external calls as well, not to mention ensuring that you never miss the latest episodes of your favurite television program, etc.
