Cyber-cafes Still Favoured Access Point For Internet In India
Nearly 36% of the 16.8 million active Internet users prefer cyber-cafes to access the Internet, according to a new report by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International. This is quite a drop from the 53% in 2003. Age and profession played an important role in determing the access points for the Internet - thus while a majority of school and college students preferred to access Internet from cyber cafes, 45 per cent of older men and 46 per cent of non-working women preferred to access Internet from home.
The percentage of users accessing Internet from schools grew by 1%, but is still at an abysmal 7%. Considering that schools could serve as the first point of access for most youngsters, this is one area that would need work.
Contrary to popular belief, the report also found that more users accessed Internet from homes than from offices — the percentage being 30 and 25 per cent respectively for the year 2007.
