IIT Lectures, Courses To Go Online

Following MIT’s OpenCourseWare and Berkley University’s channel on YouTube, expect to see the seven institutes and the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore stream lectures and course material online over the next few months. This comes as part of a Rs 110 crore government project to help lift generally poor standards at an estimated 1,500 engineering colleges across India.
Makes sense given that corporates are expected to spend $438 mn on training the approximately 100,000 engineers that they plan to hire - not very good news for our education system. The acedemia on its end, finds itself in the midst of a crippling faculty, and hence this move serves as a rather innovative solution.
This initiative stems from the National Programme for Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), a project that was initially conceptualized by the faculty at IIT Madras and has been under development since 2003.
