(Opium Of The People)2.0
Further to my earlier post, a recent survey by ComScore talked about the stupendous success of GodTube - that’s YouTube for the religious inclined, nominating it the fastest growng US website. Launched unofficially in January, GodTube.com showed 973% month-on-month growth in August - the month of its officially launch, with an estimated 1.7 million unique visitors in August, expected to double in the next month.
GodTube.com is an online community delivering user-generated videos on a diverse array of topics, ranging from comedy to powerful personal testimonials, musical performances to sermons, and is host to more than 20,000 videos - all aimed at Christians with a knack for the Internet.
This comes at a time, when while Church attendance among young
people has plummeted, yet more than 82 million Americans use the Web for faith-related reasons, according to Pew Internet. Other sites like MyChurch for instance have also seen immense growth.
Religion, after all IS the “opium of the people” as Karl Marx put it - be it in the real world or the virtual one.
