Medical Journals Go Free

oncologystat-20070914.jpgSome time back in my post Are we moving towards a free lunch? I had mentioned the shift towards advertising that is driving most internet businesses. Now with OncologySTAT.com, Reed Elsevier is trying to do the same for medical journals, in the process turning the medical publishing’s high subscription model on its head.
OncologySTAT.com, gives doctors free access to the latest articles from 100 of its own pricey medical journals against registration. Elsevier hopes to sign up 150,000 professional users within the next 12 months and to attract advertising and sponsorships, especially from pharmaceutical companies with cancer drugs to sell according to this article in the New York Times.
Given the estimated $1 billion health science online advertising market in the United States, would this pave the road for others to follow.
