Indian songs at Rs. 12
Saregama India, part of the Gramophone Company of India and owners of the pioneering HamaraCD.com are planning to launch a portal from where users would be able to download over 27,000 hours of music at Rs. 12 per song. HamaraCD was one of the first Indian sites which gave the user the option to create a CD comprising of a selection of their favourite songs. These could further be personalised with their preferred image, CD title and message. This was at a time when download speeds did not warrant downloading songs.
Following the lead set by Apple iTunes, this new portal comes as a natural response to piracy. The other initiative that Saregama is taking, is in the mobile space. According to some estimates, mobile music - songs on MP3 players and mobile phones have already overtaken sales if music on CDs and cassettes in India. And by 2010, this may account for nearly 80% of all music sold in the country.
