Less than two years back, Facebook had just about reached 500 million users, and now, they claim to have already crossed 800 million users. Mobile phone application downloads in the Asia-Pacific region are set to touch almost five billion by the end of 2011, up 189% when compared with the 1.6 billion downloads in 2010. What’s more, this is expected to touch 14 billion by 2016. Read more »

The government plans to launch a single payment gateway for e-governance services in 11 states (including Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Goa) by March, 2012, which will facilitate collection of fees for licences and other chargeable services over the internet. Around 20 services, including those provided by both the central and state governments, will be linked to the payment platform in the next two to three months, enabling citizens to make online payments and doing away with the need to visit government offices. A Norton study across 24 countries, calculates the cost of global cybercrime at $114 billion annually with an additional $274 billion estimated as the value that the victims surveyed placed on time lost due to their cybercrime experiences. This incidentally is more than the combined global black market in marijuana, cocaine and heroin ($288 billion). Read more »
